How a travel eSIM works

From choosing a plan to connecting on arrival. Installation and activation details can differ between plans and devices; the instructions for your plan always take priority.

  1. 1

    Choose a destination

Search for the country you're visiting. For several countries on one trip, a regional or global plan may be simpler: check that every country you'll visit is on its coverage list.

  2. 2

    Purchase a compatible plan

Compare data allowance and validity, and read the plan details: when the validity starts, whether hotspot is allowed, and any fair-use limits.

Before paying, make sure your phone supports eSIM and isn't locked to your operator.

  3. 3

    Install the eSIM

After payment is confirmed and your eSIM is ready, open your order page or account. Install while connected to Wi-Fi, ideally before you travel.

Scan the QR code from another screen, or enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code manually if you're installing on the phone showing the details. Many eSIM profiles can be installed only once, so don't delete it afterwards.

  4. 4

    Configure it

Give the new line a name such as “Travel”. On dual-SIM phones you can keep your main line on for calls and texts.

Set the travel eSIM as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for that line. Follow any extra instructions shown with your plan, such as an APN setting.

  5. 5

    Connect when conditions are met

When you arrive in a covered country, the eSIM connects to a supported local network. Plans start according to their activation rule, which is shown on the plan and your order.

On iPhone

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular) → Add eSIM.
  3. Use QR Code, or Enter Details Manually.
  4. Label the line, then choose which line to use for data.
  5. On arrival, turn on Data Roaming for the travel line.

Menu names vary by iOS version. iOS 17.4 and later may offer one-tap installation from a supplier link.

On Android

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Settings → Network & internet (or Connections) → SIMs.
  3. Add eSIM / Download a SIM, then scan the QR code or enter the code.
  4. Select the eSIM for mobile data.
  5. On arrival, enable roaming for the eSIM.

Steps differ by manufacturer (Samsung, Google, Xiaomi and others) and Android version.
